FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: When do I need to make a Health Certificate Appointment for my pet?

A: Health certificates must be issued within 10 days prior to your pet’s departure. If making multiple stops, you should make the appointment within 10 days of the final departure date. There are some exceptions to this, so please make sure to confirm the issue date requirements with your airlines.

Q: What are the requirements to fly with my pet to a specific state?

A: Different states, territories and airlines have varying rules and requirements for traveling with a pet. Again, you will need to call the airline you’ll be traveling on, as well as the Department of Agriculture in the State you will be flying into, for their specific requirements before setting up your pet’s appointment for a health certificate. The USDA website can also help you determine what paperwork you may need.

By knowing what to prepare for, you can help make sure that both you and your pet have a fun and safe trip together!

Q: Is a Rabies Vaccine Required in order to fly with my pet

A: Typically, yes. However, certain states do not require a rabies vaccination when flying from a Non-Rabies state. Please see the USDA website for more information.

Q: Should I put flea/tick medication on my pet before traveling?

A: It is not required for all states and/or airlines but it is highly recommended. If your pet is traveling with other pets OR if there are holding facilities that your pet has to travel through, a flea/tick preventative will be helpful in avoiding infestations at your destination.

Q: Should my dog currently be taking Heartworm medications, even if they are strictly indoors and flying to an area without heartworms?

A: There is evidence that strictly indoor dogs can still be exposed to mosquitoes that carry and infect them with Heartworm Disease. If your pet is not currently on a heartworm prevention, we recommend testing them and finding out their heartworm status. If it is negative, we can give up to a 6-month supply of Heartworm Prevention and recommend testing again in 6 months to ensure they were not infected while off of their prevention. Heartworm disease is easily preventable and, if allowed to mature, can be very difficult for the patient during treatment.

Q: Can your clinic provide documentation to say that my pet is a Service or Emotional Support Animal?

A: No. Please see the USDA Website concerning documentation for Service, Assistant, and Support animals.

Q: What do I need to do if I am returning to Hawaii with my pet?

A: Please refer to this 5-day-or-less checklist, from the Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture, for the latest information regarding returning or traveling to Hawaii.
